Yesterday, our hearts were crushed by the tragic news of the two beautiful Israeli embassy officials killed in Washington, D.C.
Not in a conflict zone. Here at home.
We’re living in a time where safety is no longer assumed. Jewish communities across the country are navigating rising antisemitism, heightened threats, and deep uncertainty. Parents are asking tougher questions. Teachers are running more drills. Institutions are being forced to think about security in a way they never have before.
Our Greater MetroWest NJ community remains strong and resilient. Security needs continue to be at an all-time high and our local law enforcement has stepped up patrols at Federation Headquarters, Jewish institutions across the area, to keep us safe.
In discussion recently with Alana Shlagbaum, Director of Temple Beth Shalom’s preschool, she credits Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ for incredible impact safety measures have helped parents feel safe and secure while their kids are at school. Chief Security Officer of the Gloria and Jesse Weissberg Community Security Initiative, Thomas “Chip” Michaels, personally reviewed her school’s security protocols, ensured cameras were set up, trained the staff and all security personnel.
Alana shared: “Our security needs are increasing. Because of the atmosphere in the world right now, our teachers are afraid. Our parents are afraid. Federation has been a true partner in helping us prepare, so families feel safe leaving their children with us.”
These security measures continue to be made possible in thanks to the Leadership Leap, a bold initiative within Federation’s 2025 UJA Annual Campaign. The Leap directs critical resources to two areas where the need is immediate:
- Mental health support in Ofakim, a city in southern Israel still recovering from the trauma of October 7
- Increased security personnel here in Greater MetroWest, to protect our schools, synagogues, and community spaces
Benjamin Lehrhoff, Co-chair of the Leadership Leap, explains: “Unfortunately, the need right now is greater than the resources. And what we never want to do is turn someone away, especially when we can help keep them safe. We have to keep coming together, sending our kids to school, showing up for each other. Because it’s really important that we keep doing what we’re supposed to do and not let anyone stop us.”
