The holidays are just around the corner, a season filled with warmth, celebration, and connection. Whether you’re gathering around the Thanksgiving table, lighting the menorah for Hanukkah, or simply enjoying the festive spirit, this time of year reminds us of the joy that comes from being together and giving thanks.
It’s a season of abundance, but also a time to reflect on those who may be struggling. While many of us are planning meals and celebrations, others in our community are facing the harsh reality of food insecurity. Rising costs of groceries and transportation continue to stretch household budgets, making it difficult for some families to afford even the basics, let alone a holiday meal.
In moments like these, we have the power to show up for one another.
The Center for Volunteerism, chaired by Melanie Kass and Shana Pantirer, is offering a variety of hands-on opportunities to support our neighbors in need throughout Greater MetroWest. In New Jersey, more than 1.1 million residents, including over 270,000 children, face hunger every day. By volunteering your time, you can help ensure that everyone in our community has the chance to celebrate the season with dignity, comfort, and joy.
And there’s a way for everyone to get involved. Whether you’re looking for a meaningful activity to do with your kids, want to enjoy a “guys night out” volunteer event, or prefer to kick things off with a Mimosa meet-up before diving into service — we’ve got you covered. We’re also proud to partner with the Jewish Relief Agency (JRA) at our Together We Box Out Hunger event, expanding our reach and impact even further.
Volunteering is not only a way to give back, but also a way to live out our values. When you participate, you’re performing a mitzvah and embracing the Jewish principle of tikkun olam, repairing the world through acts of kindness and service. And the benefits extend beyond those you help. Research shows that volunteering:
- Boosts physical and mental health
- Provides a sense of purpose and teaches valuable life skills
- Strengthens relationships and builds community
This holiday season let’s come together to spread compassion, hope, and generosity. Whether you volunteer solo, with friends, or as a family, your efforts will make a real difference, not just in the lives of others, but in your own.
Because when we lift each other up, we all shine a little more brightly.
