Who are the Rishonim? Get to Know the Israeli Teens Volunteering in Our Community

Maya Lior Senior Community Shlicha

After a rigorous selection process, six amazing Rishonim from the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) have been chosen to volunteer in our Greater MetroWest community. Each of these talented individuals were selected for their past experiences in group work, leadership, and English language skills. They have all made the difficult decision to defer their army service for one year offering themselves as ambassadors in service to the Jewish people.

This is a significant commitment on their part, and for this alone, they deserve our admiration!

What is the Rishonim Program?

The Rishonim program (ShinShinim) brings together 18-year-old volunteers, serving in communities around the world for a year between high school and military service. In our community, the Rishonim program has been active for 22 years (!!!). We call them “Rishonim” (Hebrew for “First Ones“) and not “ShinShinim,” as is common in most locations, because the very first volunteer that came to Greater MetroWest was from one of our Partner Communities in Israel, Rishon LeZion.

Here’s what they have planned…

Our new Rishonim are excited to serve our community in a variety of ways. They’ll act as informal educators, bringing Israeli spirit, culture, and current events to our Day Schools, Hebrew Schools, JCCs, and the wider community in a way that is engaging, creative, and fun. You can also expect to see them at early childhood centers, seniors’ groups, and various youth movements, such as Israeli Scouts (Tzofim), and more.

But the role of the Rishon extends far beyond the walls of any institution.

Personal interactions, whether during breaks, conversations, events, or just getting to know all members of our community, are crucial. These connections make the Rishon feel valued, allowing them to truly become an integral part of our day-to-day lives. We’re looking forward to each of them spending as much time as possible within the community, so they can feel a profound sense of home here.

So please take the time to welcome them!

Each Rishon lives with two hosts throughout the year, one per semester. This gives them the chance to experience the diverse culture of the Jewish diaspora up close, while also sharing the traditions and customs they grew up with in Israel. We are incredibly thankful to the wonderful hosts, without whom we would not be able to run this program. We know, from our 22 years of experience, that hosting a Rishon is life-changing for both sides. As we usually say, it’s a two-way exchange.

By the end of their service, we’re all changed by this special year together, having strengthened the living bridge between Israel and our community. Rishonim is made possible through our partnership with the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI). To learn more, please visit our Host a Rishon page.
