CONTRACT Role Summary: Mashgiach (90-Day Engagement, possible extension)

Operational supervision for a new dining opening at a senior living community of roughly 150 residents across independent living, assisted living, and memory care. The community maintains a fully kosher, fully supervised standard of observance at the community level (not Glatt or mehadrin) under a rabbi of record. The kitchen is a meat operation with a separate dairy side, so we need a Sabbath-observant candidate who can be present on the floor.

Responsibilities

Receiving and procurement: oversight of all incoming food and supplies; verification against approved vendor and product standards
Production: daily presence in the kitchen during meal preparation; separation of meat and dairy operations, equipment handling, and compliance with established protocols
Service: monitoring of plating, service, and dining operations to maintain kashrut standards
Record keeping: maintaining the required logs and documentation for the program
Staff support: guidance to culinary and hospitality teams on daily kashrut practice

Prior mashgiach experience is welcome but not a prerequisite. We have a written kashrus SOP, a rabbi of record, and training in place; what we need most is someone reliable, observant, and willing to be present.

Essential (Non-Negotiable)

Shabbat observance — full Sabbath compliance is a requirement for the position
Fluency in kashrut law and practice — working knowledge of the laws governing kosher food preparation, equipment use, separation of meat and dairy, and the standards your rabbi of record has established
Attention to detail and consistency — the role depends on catching deviations before they reach residents

Highly Desirable

Kitchen operations familiarity — comfort reading a prep schedule, understanding equipment function, recognizing when mise is out of order
Record-keeping and documentation — ability to maintain organized, legible logs; comfort with forms and compliance tracking
Communication and teaching skill — you’ll guide staff through daily practice; clarity and patience matter more than formal certification
Procurement knowledge — ability to read labels, cross-reference vendor lists, ask the right questions about product sourcing and certification

Supporting Qualities

Reliability and presence — willingness to be on the floor daily and show up on schedule
Collaborative mindset — you’re working with the culinary and hospitality teams, not policing them
Problem-solving orientation — when something isn’t right, you’ll need to troubleshoot rather than just report it

Prior Experience

Mashgiach experience is welcome but not required — the SOP, rabbi, and training structure are already in place to support someone who is observant and willing to learn your specific community’s approach

Required Qualifications

Kashrut Knowledge — Working fluency in the laws and practices of kashrut (Jewish dietary laws); certification as a mashgiach or formal training in kashrut supervision is preferred but not required
Food Service or Kitchen Environment — Demonstrated experience working in or around food production, receiving, or food service operations (prior mashgiach work strongly preferred but not required)
Clear Background — Ability to pass standard background check and provide references from prior employers or rabbinic contacts
English Fluency — Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in English with culinary staff, management, and the rabbi of record
Physical Capacity — Ability to be present on the kitchen floor daily, including standing for extended periods and physical movement through production and service areas
Reliability — Consistent availability to work scheduled weekday shifts and Shabbat/festival service days

Preferred Qualifications

Prior mashgiach experience at a senior living community or healthcare facility
Experience with IDDSI texture-modified food preparation or dietary compliance programs
Knowledge of food safety protocols and sanitation standards
Familiarity with menu planning or food costing in institutional settings

Salary: Weekday service: $55 per hour Shabbat and festival days: $75 per hour
