You know that feeling when you’re at the grocery store, grabbing a few staples—maybe some eggs, coffee, a carton of oat milk, and those snacks the kids love—and then the cashier hands you the receipt, and you’re thinking, how did this small haul get so expensive?
We’ve all had that moment of shock.
Now imagine feeling that every single time you shop but knowing there’s no extra money to make up the difference. Families, parents, and children are all wrestling with a question that no one should have to face:
“Will we have enough to eat this week?”
That’s the reality for nearly a million people in New Jersey today.
Food insecurity has surged by 22% this year, and it’s hitting families hard. This includes more than 260,000 children, or about one in eight kids in the state.
And for many Jewish households already struggling, the pressure to make ends meet—to cover food and other necessities—is becoming overwhelming.
The rise in food insecurity can be attributed to several factors: soaring food prices, the expiration of pandemic-related safety nets, and wages that have failed to keep pace with the cost of living.
In response to this urgent need, The Center for Volunteerism is stepping up this fall. And we hope you will join us! Choose from four distinct hands-on volunteer opportunities aimed at assisting our local community with its food insecurities.
