The Power of Teen Volunteering on Community Mitzvah Day

Teen volunteering- Community Mitzvah Day

On Sunday, March 30, Community Mitzvah Day returns to Greater MetroWest NJ. All teens in our community are encouraged to choose a project that interests them, grab a friend, and join us as we give back.

But why is Community Mitzvah Day so important?

Your time is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give someone. And in giving, you gain new perspectives, personal growth, and a stronger, more connected community. Judaism teaches that we have a responsibility to help others and repair the world through Tikkun Olam. Acts of service, whether helping the less fortunate, protecting the environment, or supporting social causes, allow teens to actively fulfill this mitzvah (commandment). Similarly, chesed (acts of loving-kindness) and tzedakah (charitable giving) emphasize selfless giving, reinforcing the importance of generosity, fairness, and justice.

Through volunteering, Jewish teens bring these values to life, creating a more compassionate and ethical society.

When teens volunteer, they connect with others, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and build meaningful relationships within the Jewish and broader community. This engagement helps them feel a sense of belonging and encourages them to be active contributors to societal well-being. Additionally, Judaism teaches that performing mitzvot with joy enhances their impact, showing that giving is not only a responsibility but also a source of fulfillment and happiness.

By engaging in acts of service, Jewish teens cultivate leadership, purpose, and a lifelong commitment to helping others.

Volunteering empowers them to take action and make meaningful changes, reinforcing the Jewish teaching Ma’aseh Hu Ha’ikar—action is the main thing (Pirkei Avot 1:17). Instead of waiting for the perfect moment or the right mindset, the important thing is to follow through, no matter what, and make change happen. Whether through synagogue programs, school initiatives, or independent efforts, every act of service contributes to a better world.

Take the first step, find a cause you care about, and start making a difference—one good deed at a time.
