Navigating the December Holidays as an Interfaith Family

Sharon Zucker Director of Welcoming and Inclusion

December is a month filled with excitement, family, food, and magical holiday celebrations—but for many interfaith families, it can also bring about tricky conversations and tough decisions. For those celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas, this year’s overlap may feel especially challenging.

Why? Because the first night of Hanukkah falls on Christmas Day this year. And while that might mean double the presents and extra latkes, it could also mean figuring out the best way to juggle family traditions and create a meaningful experience for everyone. Which side of the family do you spend the day with? How can you make both holidays feel equally special? We know these decisions aren’t always easy.

If you find yourself in this situation—or are interested in learning more about navigating interfaith holidays—then this Zoom event is for you! Join us on December 12 at 7 p.m. for December Together: A Conversation by and for Interfaith Couples about Navigating the December Holidays, co-hosted with 18Doors, a national organization helping interfaith and multi-cultural families confidently embrace their Jewish identity.

As Aliyah Walters, our Young Family/PJ Library Associate, beautifully pointed out, this year’s holiday overlap is a powerful reminder to reflect on what these holidays truly mean to us. She highlighted the PJ Library book Chanukah Lights Everywhere, which shows how a Jewish family feels moved by both the Hanukkah candles in their window and the Christmas lights of their neighbors. This message is clear: It’s possible to honor our own traditions while also appreciating what others celebrate.

And here’s the fun twist—this year, we’ll also be lighting the 7th Hanukkah candle on New Year’s Eve! How’s that for an extended celebration of light?
