Honoring a Life of Leadership, Learning, and Community

Our Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater MetroWest NJ mourn the loss of Rav Elazar Mayer Teitz zt”l, longtime leader of the Jewish community in Elizabeth, NJ. He was humble, passionate, brilliant, and cared about every person, which made him a rav, rebbi, and leader of unique stature.

Under Rav Teitz’s guidance, the Jewish Educational Center (JEC) in Elizabeth flourished, encompassing the JEC Lower and Middle School, Rav Teitz Mesivta Academy (high school for boys), and Bruriah High School for Girls, a Kollel, multiple mikvaot, a cemetery, day care, community center, day camp, and more.

These institutions have educated and cared for generations of students and families, emphasizing the harmonious integration of Torah study with secular knowledge. Rav Teitz’s leadership was extensive and included fostering unity among the community’s shuls (congregations) and being a prominent voice in local and global Jewish affairs.

The Rav’s knowledge of all areas of Torah and Jewish law, combined with his love of mathematics, formed the foundation of a life dedicated to the value of straightness, prioritizing honesty and clarity in thought and action—and service to the community. The Rav distinguished himself as an expert in Jewish divorce and conversion, with his work being accepted throughout the world. Rav Teitz was a Torah scholar, beloved educator, community builder, and a role model to all.

His passing leaves many searching for ways to honor his legacy—a leader who gave so much to strengthen Jewish life and community. One way to continue his work is by making a tribute gift in his honor, securing a strong, welcoming Jewish future for generations to come.

May his memory be a blessing.
