Oheb Shalom: Refugee Shabbat

Date: Saturday, April 20
Time: 9:45 am - 12:00 pm (EDT)
Oheb Shalom Congregation

Join KIND Newark’s Jackie Stabnow, Managing Director, and Lizbeth Veliz, Social Services Supervisor, for a discussion about KIND’s work with unaccompanied immigrant children seeking safety in New Jersey. KIND (Kids in Need of Defense) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied refugee and migrant children. Currently, KIND’s New Jersey office in Newark represents over 400 children from 19 countries in their immigration proceedings. These children immigrated to the U.S. without a parent and are fleeing gang violence, abuse, extreme poverty, and other traumatic circumstances. KIND’s social services program ensures that these migrant and refugee children also receive the necessary support and community resources to obtain services such as counseling, educational support, medical care and other comprehensive services. Come to learn more about the immigrant children in our communities and how you can help.

A Barbara Zinbarg z”l Kiddush Lunch will follow. Our guests will be available during the luncheon, should you wish to continue the conversation.

Jackie Stabnow has been the Managing Director of KIND’s Newark office since February 2023. She is an attorney who has worked on unaccompanied immigrant children’s matters for almost 10 years, and a graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law.

Lizbeth Veliz has been the Social Services Supervisor of KIND’s Newark office since January 2019. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy, and has been providing social services to underserved population for almost 15 years.
