The recent release of Edan Alexander, a New Jersey native, from Hamas captivity has brought a glimmer of hope to families, communities, and advocates committed to the safe return of all hostages held in Gaza. His return marks a significant milestone amid a harrowing crisis. Unfortunately, it also highlights the fact that 58 hostages still remain in captivity, held by Hamas, with their families awaiting news and advocating for their release.
The timing of Edan’s release coincides closely with Lag B’Omer, a Jewish holiday celebrated with joy, reflection, and hope. Lag B’Omer commemorates the resilience of the Jewish people and traditions—an occasion that encourages unity, remembrance, and renewal of faith during challenging times. For many, the holiday serves as a reminder of perseverance in the face of adversity and the importance of hope for the safe return of loved ones.
This holiday’s themes resonate deeply with the ongoing situation in Gaza. The plight of the remaining hostages underscores the urgent need for continued efforts toward their safe release. Each individual held hostage carries a story, a family, and hopes for reunion—values that Lag B’Omer embodies through its celebration of resilience and hope.
The origins of Lag B’Omer trace back to the 2nd century, marking the end of a devastating plague that killed over 20,000 of Rabbi Akiva students during the Roman occupation. This year, we are hoping that we can soon celebrate the end of the dark period we have all suffered through since October 7, 2023 with the release of the remaining hostages.
In the meantime, we welcome Edan home to his family and our extended community.
In Israel, Lag B’Omer is traditionally celebrated with barbeques, picnics, and bonfires, but this year I expect there will be a different type of celebration. As communities gather to reflect, and renew their faith, the world watches with hope and concern. The release of Edan Alexander exemplifies the possibility of hope turning into reality and reinforces the collective call for justice and compassion for the remaining captives.
Together, during this meaningful holiday, we are reminded that perseverance, faith, and unity are essential. We continue to pray and advocate for the safe return of all hostages, holding onto the belief that peace and resolution are within reach.
Chag Sameach!
Side note: In my role as Interim CEO, I have asked our entire Federation team to investigate the use of new technologies so that we can do more with the resources given us by our donors. One aspect of that work is how we incorporate Artificial Intelligence into our regular responsibilities. I am happy to tell you that much of this article was written using AI, with lots of oversight from my own eyes and hands. I hope it still sounds like it came from my heart.
