DESCRIPTION:Born with an onslaught of medical challenges\, Suzy Fisher’s life was initially defined by a series of “nevers.” Later diagnosed with Joubert syndrome (JS)\, she faced immense obstacles. However\, with unwavering support from her family she defied every expectation. Her mother Jane authored a memoir titled If You Knew Suzy: Pushing Past the Boundaries of ‘Never’. This book serves as a roadmap for parents and grandparents and is a tribute to perseverance.\nJane Fischer has a master’s degree in special education\, and certifications as a Teacher of the Handicapped and as a Learning Consultant from Montclair University. She and her husband started a program called Gateway to Social Opportunity to allow children with disabilities the opportunity to be a part of recreational activities.\nFree to all. DESCRIPTION:Did you know there are more than 200 toxic sites in the Ironbound section of Newark\, home to 50\,000 people and the state’s largest garbage incinerator? The Ironbound’s surrounding industry has helped the local and regional economy but caused significant environmental degradation. This points to the growing question of how to achieve environmental justice\, an idea that everyone – regardless of race\, color or income – has the right to live in a clean and safe environment. \nWe will learn from experts about what is happening just 10 miles from Livingston\, the impact on the wider community and what we can do to advocate for a healthier Essex County. \nOur program features a screening of the short documentary\, “The Sacrifice Zone\,” followed by lunch and a panel discussion with: \nA representative from the Ironbound Community Corporation. Founded in 1969\, Ironbound Community Corporation’s (ICC’s) mission is to engage and empower individuals\, families\, and groups in realizing their aspirations and\, together\, work to create a just\, vibrant and sustainable community. \nPam R. Factor-Litvak\, PhD\, Professor of Epidemiology at the Columbia University Medical Center\, who studies children’s environmental health and the epidemiology of neurodegenerative disorders and examines early environmental factors (including contaminants\, stress\, maternal nutrition and other factors) on health across the life span. \nThe Ironbound Community Corporation also helps Newark residents experiencing food insecurity. DESCRIPTION:What is a Jewish book? How have Jewish ideas been transmitted over the centuries—from oral traditions to handwritten manuscripts\, from printed books to computer code. Dr. Joseph A. Skloot (Hebrew Union College) examines the vast history of Jewish texts and tackles key questions\, such as what makes a work holy or canonical. He will offer a behind-the-scenes look at a Hebrew print shop in sixteenth-century Italy and also discuss recent initiatives such as Sefaria.org\, an online library that houses 3\,000 years of Jewish texts.
