DESCRIPTION:Dr. Noam Sienna\, the Bildner Center’s Aresty Visiting Scholar\, will offer a window into Jewish life in the Islamic world\, from medieval Cairo to modern-day North Africa\, through an examination of Jewish books and other written texts. Texts produced by Jews over the centuries in Egypt\, the Ottoman Mediterranean\, North Africa\, and the Middle East shed important light on the dynamics of interreligious encounters among Jews\, Christians\, and Muslims; local relations with the transnational Jewish diaspora; the legacy of the Jewish expulsion from Spain in 1492 CE; and the active role taken by Jews in Islamic countries during the complex\, turbulent transition to modernity. This three-part virtual mini-course is free and open to the public. Advance registration is required on the Bildner Center’s website.

DESCRIPTION:Registration is now closed.  \nFor more than 40 years\, Americans have honored the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. by observing his birthday with a day of service. For the Jewish community\, Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day is an opportunity to pay special attention to the Jewish values of tzedakah-charity and tikkun olam-to heal the world. \nThis year Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ’s Coalition for Jewish and African American Unity and the Center for Volunteerism will be joining forces with Kean University. First\, we will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s legacy\, then we will work together to address the college students who are facing basic needs insecurity. \nMore than 23% of college students nationwide struggle to afford basic needs like food and housing\, and in New Jersey\, that number balloons to between 30-40%. \nJoin us in making a difference as we work together to create hundreds of College Care Packages to be donated to local New Jersey college students in need. \n11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Celebration  \n12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Service with Purpose: College Care Packages
