DESCRIPTION:Join Renaissance/New Directions here at TBO\, on Sunday\, January 11 from 12:30-2:30pm\, for Lunch\, starting at 12:30pm\, followed by Janet Mandel’s Art Talk on Nazi-Looted Art: Gustav Klimt–Painter of Vienna’s Golden Age. \n$15 for Renaissance/New Directions existing Members\, and $30 for non-members. All are welcome! \nAbout the Art Talk:\nGustav Klimt’s rise in fin-de-siècle Vienna was closely intertwined with Jewish patrons whose progressive taste and financial support helped define the modern character of his work. Families such as the Bloch-Bauers and Lederers assembled extraordinary collections that later were looted\, dispersed\, or destroyed during the Nazi period. This presentation tells the story of what happened to these families and their collections and how the debate over provenance\, restitution\, and cultural memory continues today. \nRead more about Janet:\nJanet Mandel taught in New Jersey’s public schools for 32 years\, the last eighteen of which were at Columbia High School in Maplewood\, where she taught English\, art history\, and World Languages and Cultures. In October of 2003 she was named runner-up for the New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH) Teacher of the Year award and was formally recognized by the New Jersey State Legislature and Governor Codey for this achievement. In May of 2004 she was the recipient of the “Innovations in Special Education Award” from the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) and the Association of Schools and Agencies for the Handicapped (ASAH). Janet Cohen Mandel is a popular speaker\, very much in demand at museums\, libraries\, and schools for her presentations on a wide range of art subjects.

SUMMARY:Jewish Books in the Islamic World: From the Middle Ages Until Modern Times
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Noam Sienna\, the Bildner Center’s Aresty Visiting Scholar\, will offer a window into Jewish life in the Islamic world\, from medieval Cairo to modern-day North Africa\, through an examination of Jewish books and other written texts. Texts produced by Jews over the centuries in Egypt\, the Ottoman Mediterranean\, North Africa\, and the Middle East shed important light on the dynamics of interreligious encounters among Jews\, Christians\, and Muslims; local relations with the transnational Jewish diaspora; the legacy of the Jewish expulsion from Spain in 1492 CE; and the active role taken by Jews in Islamic countries during the complex\, turbulent transition to modernity. This three-part virtual mini-course is free and open to the public. Advance registration is required on the Bildner Center’s website.
