SUMMARY:Golden Pages Book Club: Elaine Culbertson\, "Mamaleh"
DESCRIPTION:Elaine Culbertson joins us in person to discuss her book “Mamaleh.” \nFree\, in-person\, and open to the community\, the Golden Pages Book Club is an opportunity for older adults to connect through reading and discussion. Lunch to follow. Made possible by a grant from the Grotta Fund. \nIn Mamaleh: A Legacy of Loss and Love\, Culbertson has created a new kind of Holocaust survivor story. It is a memoir that combines her mother Dora Freilich’s personal recollections of her life as a survivor with Elaine’s reflections on growing up in a family that had experienced the trauma of the Holocaust. Dora’s survival of two full years in Auschwitz was indeed a miracle\, but her beautifully expressed memory of that time\, as well as the life that she and her husband built in America is a miracle as well. \nStartling\, sometimes funny\, but always poignant\, the book will immerse the reader in the challenges of survival\, immigration\, and assimilation as told by a mother and daughter who came from two different worlds\, but who forged a relationship based on love and respect. \nElaine Culbertson served as program director of the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Teachers’ Program\, founded by Vladka Meed\, that provided professional development to more than 1\,100 teachers in its 36-year existence. She currently collaborates with teachers and students to connect the events of the past and the present day.

SUMMARY:NCJW Essex's: Wise Women Wednesday – Friendship
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, friendship was considered cultural not biological\, valued but not invaluable. That view has changed as scientists have recognized the critical importance of strong social bonds for well-being and longevity. Friendship is as important for our health as diet and exercise—it is the relational equivalent of superfood. And there have been real evolutionary advantages to being good at making and maintaining friends. The new science of friendship explains its implications for all aspects of our lives from personal time to parenting to professions. Both at home and in the workplace\, it clarifies what friendship is\, puts quality ahead of quantity\, and provides hard evidence for prioritizing this essential relationship. \nJoin us for a fun and informative evening with speaker Lydia Denworth\, author of Friendship: The Evolution\, Biology & Extraordinary Power of Life’s Fundamental Bond. Read more about Lydia below! \nThis eye-opening evening will cover different aspects on the topic of friendship from a human biological need\, including: life stages\, men vs. women\, workplace friendships\, marriage\, etc. Come learn things you might never have thought about regarding friendships\, old and new. Whether you’re bringing a friend and/or connecting with new friends on May 13\, we hope to see you there!
