SUMMARY:Protecting Voting Rights
DESCRIPTION:In this timely program\, retired NJ Supreme Court Justice Gary S. Stein (pictured) will speak about the history and current issues surrounding voting rights\, followed by Q & A. \nElection regulation became controversial following President Trump’s 2020 election loss and the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2021 decision weakening the 1965 Voting Rights Act\, Both sides of the debate claim they want to protect voting rights\, but they are diametrically opposed as to what that means and how it should be done. President Biden tried and failed to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act; now President Trump has asked Congress to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act\, imposing proof of citizenship requirements on voter registration and photo i.d. requirements at the polls. In March\, he signed an Executive Order purporting to make similar changes in State election laws\, which is being challenged in the Courts. For its part\, the U.S. Supreme Court will decide two voting rights cases before its term ends in June\, one about remedial race-conscious redistricting and the other about mail-in ballots cast but not delivered before Election Day. There’s plenty to talk about! \nThis program is presented by Oheb’s Social Justice Initiative Committee. It is free and open to the public. A light dinner will be served.
