Temple Sholom: Viewing & Discussion of “A Tree of Life” Documentary

Date: Sunday, October 27
Time: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm (EDT)
Temple Sholom of Scotch Plains

Temple Sholom in Scotch Plains, NJ, will be marking the sixth anniversary of the attack on the Tree of Life Synagogues in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by showing the documentary, “A Tree of Life: The Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting” and follow the viewing with a discussion. On October 27, 2018, a gunman opened fire inside the Tree of Life building which actually housed three different small congregations. Eleven people were killed. The film, an HBO documentary, tells the story of the day the shooting occurred as well as the aftermath of the violent attack, as they worked to rebuild and heal. The film sheds light on the collective trauma suffered by a tight-knit group and brings into sharp focus the hate-based rhetoric that seems common to many mass shootings in the United States. The film incorporates the voices of those who survived, family members of those who perished as well as members of the local Muslim and Black communities who came to the assistance of The Tree of Life.
