Dan Guan & Lauren Kasiarz

"As newcomers to the community, and having not known anyone when we moved here, we have felt so deeply grateful for the kind and generous families we've gotten to know in the area."

When did you get involved with Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ?

We are just starting to get involved! We moved to the area right before Hurricane Ida, were inspired by the incredible outreach of our community members, got connected with Federation, and here we are!

How are you involved?

We have begun getting involved with a few different branches of the Federation—PJ Library, the Center for Volunteerism, and the Holocaust Council, and JFS.

When you last (volunteered, made a donation, attended an event, etc.), how did that make you feel?

In the last few weeks, we’ve joined a Parent Meet and Greet with others from our local community, and we also organized a mitzvah project for other families with small children. We ended up creating and gifting nearly 70 cold weather kits to a local food pantry.

As newcomers to the community, and having not known anyone when we moved here, we have felt so deeply grateful for the kind and generous families we’ve gotten to know in the area.

What motivates you to stay involved?

There are three reasons we are excited to continue deepening our relationship with the Federation:

  1. Connection – there is such a strong and vibrant Jewish community here that Federation really fosters. From the children’s programming to connecting with other adults to engaging with Holocaust survivors, we’ve quickly felt like we’ve been able to make truly meaningful relationships between families and across generations.
  1. Tikkun Olam – we’ve always valued giving back to the community we live in and now that our daughter is starting to understand more of the world around her, it’s so special to be able to share that passion and encourage her to find her own ways to do mitzvot.
  1. Honoring Lauren’s grandparents – two of Lauren’s grandparents are Holocaust survivors. It is a blessing to carry forward their stories as a member of the third-generation community, so that we may never forget.

What do you wish other people knew about Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ and the work we do together?

How many ways there are to get involved! We really are in awe of the number of programs, the degree of outreach, and the span across such a large region that the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ has.
