Highlights of the day will include:

  • Braiding and baking challah
  • Additional projects for Food Bank (including assembling family packs and senior meals, sorting food donations, and packaging dry goods)
  • New this year! Community Resource Fair at the Community Food Bank – Learn more about conquering hunger in NJ and additional volunteer opportunities. Organizations represented at resource fair TBA.
  • New this year! Option to help with challah delivery from the Community Food Bank (coordinated with Jewish Family Service of MetroWest NJ)
  • New this year! Longer shifts to allow for more meaningful hands-on work

Please bring donations of canned/boxed food to benefit our local food pantries. Most needed items include: tuna, macaroni and cheese, pasta, peanut butter in plastic jars, and canned fruit.

 
Community Challah Bake

8:30 a.m.- 7 p.m. (multiple shifts available, see below for schedule)

Must be 12+ to participate.
$5 fee per person

Activities will include: Braiding and baking 800 challahs, as well as many different hands-on volunteer projects coordinated by the Food Bank to benefit our local kosher food pantries and community members in need. Please note: Activities vary from shift to shift and are subject to change. We appreciate your flexibility.

Space is limited! Pre-registration required.

PARKING

*All parking for shifts 1, 2, and 3 will be at the YM-YWHA of Union County, located at 501 Green Lane, Union. No parking will be available at the Community Food Bank of NJ other than passenger drop-off during these shifts. Shuttle buses will run to and from the Food Bank.

Buses will depart the YM-YWHA 15 minutes prior to the start of your shift.

Appropriate for children ages 6+
$18 fee per family

Pizza dinner will be served.

Activities will include: Braiding and baking challahs to benefit our community members in need, make-your-own challah dough to bring home, and additional hands-on projects.

Community Challah Bake Shift Schedule

Three daytime shifts from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and one evening shift. The shift schedule is as follows:

Shift 1: 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. (Chabad of Short Hills, Oheb Shalom, Temple Sha’arey Shalom)
Braid, Egg Wash, Transport, Projects for Food Bank
Shuttle will depart the YM-YWHA of Union County at 8:15 a.m. sharp. Shuttle will return to YM-YWHA following shift.

Shift 2 is at capacity. Contact us at challahbake@jfedgmw.org to be placed on a wait list.
Shift 2: 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (Chai Center, Congregation Beth Hatikvah - Summit, Congregation Beth Israel - Scotch Plains, JFS of MetroWest, JCC MetroWest, JCC of Central NJ, Chabad at Short Hills, Temple Emanu El - Westfield, Women's Philanthropy)

Shift 3: 12:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (Congregation Beth El - South Orange, JCC of Central NJ, JESPY House, Oheb Shalom, Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel)
Braid, wash, transport, assembling family packs and senior meals, sorting food donations, and packaging dry goods
Shuttle will depart the YM-YWHA of Union County at 12:15 p.m. sharp.  Shuttle will return to YM-YWHA following shift.

Shift 4: 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. (AABJ&D, Chabad at Short Hills, Chai Center, Diller Teens, Moishe House, Oheb Shalom, JTEEN, Temple Sha’arey Shalom)
Bag, box, track, clean up, assembling family packs and senior meals, sorting food donations, and packaging dry goods
Parking is available at Community Food Bank of NJ.
