The Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ prides itself on an effective and engaging governance process that accounts for the entire lifecycle of the volunteer leader.  The following principles are considered:

  • Good governance is key to running a successful volunteer-driven organization.
  • High level volunteer engagement and education is critical to good governance.
  • Quality processes ensure quality engagement and good governance.

As such, the Governance Associate will serve as the lead for the following tasks:

External Committee and Board Responsibilities:

  • Manage all communications related to the Board of Trustees, Board Meetings, Executive Committee meetings and the Board Governance committee meetings.
  • Working with Senior Management and the President, develop the agenda for the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee meetings and all supporting materials.
  • Develop the agenda and materials for the Governance Committee meetings.
  • Working alongside the Leadership Development Director, staff the Annual Board nominations process.
  • Serve as lead professional for the Federation Annual Meeting including agenda development, marketing, liaising with various stakeholder departments and guests, script writing and awards presentations.
  • Working in partnership with the Leadership Development Associate, staff the Board and committee orientation programs.
  • Serve as primary Staff contact for the Governance Chair.

Internal Systems and Processes Responsibilities:

Working alongside the Leadership Development Director,

  • Maintain a leadership listing of the committee chairs and committees for the Annual Report and for regular updates for colleagues.
  • Manage committee updates in contact management software (BBEC) – reminders to staff, checking for compliance, inputting national leadership roles outside Federation (JAFI, JFNA, JDC) etc.
  • Revise, publish and share the leadership guide for committees as well as the board resource guide.
  • Communicate committee giving levels to all relevant professionals.
  • Send thank you/confirmation letters from the President to all committee chairs with a clear term of service as well as roles and responsibilities.
  • Track leadership and Board vacancies.
  • Develop templates and best practices for committee invites, thank yous, job descriptions, etc.

Special Projects:

  • Working in tandem with the Center for Volunteerism, serve as lead professional for “Mitzvah of the Moment” program.

Education, Skill and Experience Requirements

  • Educational areas of discipline: Jewish communal professional, public policy, and management.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in leadership roles at Jewish communal institutions.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented executor who will continuously create the next level of achievement.
  • A wide degree of initiative and independent judgment is expected.
  • Oriented towards collaboration and community-mindedness.
  • Experience working with operational and strategic plans, goal setting and evaluation.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills necessary.
  • Familiarity with non-profit governance is a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and databases.
  • Work some evenings and weekends.
