Director of Welcoming and Inclusion

Full Time
Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ
901 Route 10, Whippany NJ

Job Title: Director of Welcoming and Inclusion
Department: Community Engagement
Reports to: Chief Community Engagement Officer
Salary Range: $75-$80k

Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ’s 2020 Community Study shares data that underscores the need for a comprehensive strategy focusing on the inclusion of the many. We have disengaged and marginalized groups within our Greater MetroWest Jewish community, including, but not exclusively, Interfaith families and LGBTQ+ community members, that seek greater communal connection. The Manager of Diversity and Inclusion will be tasked with designing strategies and guidelines to ensure that Federation is connecting with, and valuing, all members of the community.

  • Create a series of measurable and aspirational goals for what it would look like for Federation and Greater MetroWest NJ to become a “radically welcoming” Jewish community.
  • Research, develop, recommend, and execute creative strategies to foster organizational and communal diversity in pursuit of the aforementioned goals including training and seminars for both within Federation and throughout the community.
  • In partnership with national content experts, design and facilitate programs and initiatives designed to create new points of entry for previously marginalized populations—including the Honeymoon Israel program as well as other local events.
  • Review current practices and policies—both within Federation’s external leadership and engagement structure as well as within Federation’s internal policies—to assess the extent to which they support diversity and inclusion goals.
  • Manage two different volunteer committees focusing on diversity and inclusion—one comprised of Federation volunteers; the other of agency and synagogue professionals.  This management includes relationship building with its leadership and membership, coordinating meeting agendas and meeting minutes as well as implementing the ideas generated as part of these discussions.
  • Facilitate a communication strategy focusing on sharing Federation’s growth and desires for increased diversity and inclusion as well as ways in which our external messaging can be improved to facilitate an increased sense of welcomeness.
  • Position him/herself as a community resource and subject matter expert by establishing and maintaining ongoing relationships with Federation colleagues, synagogue, and agency professional leadership (rabbis, cantors, and executive directors) as well as community lay leadership.
  • Create a data management system, including the use of a success equation, to track quantitative and qualitative successes.
  • Build a team focused on increasing access and connection to Federation and the Jewish community including the supervision of the Community Concierge, who supervises the PJ Library Associate.

Education, Skills, and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.  Areas of discipline: Jewish communal leadership, organizational psychology, human resources, public policy, and management.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in leadership roles at Jewish communal institutions.
  • Futuristic thinker and executor who will continuously create the next level of achievement and will be part of a team that is committed to excellence.
  • A wide degree of creativity and independent judgment is expected.
  • Be oriented towards collaboration and community-mindedness.
  • Experience working with operational and strategic plans, goal setting and hitting milestones.
  • Must possess strong written and oral communications skills.
  • Familiarity with and understanding issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, data bases and social media.
  • Work some evenings and weekends.
